Respiratory equipment is the one category where renting the wrong machine is a medical problem, not just a wasted month. This guide covers what each machine does, what Bangalore providers charge, and the questions to settle before the delivery van arrives.
Which machine does what
A CPAP delivers a single continuous air pressure and is the standard treatment for obstructive sleep apnoea. A BiPAP delivers two pressures, higher on breathing in and lower on breathing out, and is used for COPD, some heart failure, neuromuscular weakness and for patients who cannot tolerate CPAP. An oxygen concentrator does something different: it pulls oxygen from room air for patients whose blood oxygen is low, and comes in 5 litre and 10 litre per minute versions.
Which one, and at what settings, comes from a pulmonologist's prescription or a sleep study. No responsible vendor will set up a BiPAP without the prescribed pressures, and a concentrator's flow rate is a medical instruction, not a preference.
What rental costs in Bangalore
These are ranges Bangalore providers listed publicly in September 2026.
A BiPAP machine rents for about ₹2,500 to ₹5,000 a month, with branded units from Philips or ResMed at the top. A CPAP is ₹3,000 to ₹4,400 a month, auto-titrating models at the upper end. A 5 litre oxygen concentrator is ₹3,000 to ₹4,500 a month; a 10 litre unit is about ₹5,500. Some vendors take a deposit of around ₹1,000 on concentrators; deposits on BiPAP and CPAP are rarely published and should be asked.
Rates exist for 7, 15, 30 and 90 day terms. The monthly rate per day is always the lowest, so if the patient will need the machine for more than three weeks, rent by the month.
The mask is bought, not rented
For hygiene, providers sell masks rather than rent them, and the mask is where new users get the fit wrong. A nasal mask or full-face mask costs ₹1,500 to ₹7,000 and nasal pillows ₹2,300 to ₹8,000 (India-wide prices; Bangalore-specific figures are rarely listed). A poorly fitting mask leaks, the machine compensates by pushing more air, and the patient pulls it off at 2 am. Have the setup technician fit the mask with the patient lying down, not sitting up, and ask for a different size if there are red marks on the bridge of the nose after the first night.
Tubing, filters and humidifier chambers are consumables and are usually purchased too.
What changes the price
Brand and model first: an imported auto-titrating unit costs more than a basic fixed-pressure machine, and for a long-term COPD patient the comfort features are worth it. Term second: 7 day rates are steep per day. Setup and training are included by most providers; a nurse visit to fit the mask and check the first night's use is separate.
Renting versus buying
A new CPAP costs ₹25,000 to ₹60,000 and a BiPAP ₹45,000 to ₹1,20,000, so buying breaks even against rent at about 10 to 14 months. For sleep apnoea, which is lifelong, buying after a successful two-month trial on a rented machine is the usual path. For a COPD flare, post-COVID recovery or heart failure stabilisation, rent. Oxygen concentrators are bought when the patient is on long-term oxygen therapy at home; if the prescription is for weeks, rent.
Power cuts
A concentrator stops when the power stops. Ask the vendor about a backup oxygen cylinder for the rental period if the patient's saturation drops quickly, and keep the flow rate and the pulmonologist's number on the fridge. An inverter that runs a fan will not run a 10 litre concentrator for long; check the wattage.
Who sets it up and who watches the patient
The vendor's technician installs the machine and shows the family the controls. That is not the same as someone checking the patient's breathing overnight. For a patient newly on BiPAP after a hospital stay, a home nurse for the first nights is often the difference between a settled patient and a readmission.
