How this service is delivered
In one paragraph
Newborn and child nursing at home is delivered by a GNM or B.Sc nurse with neonatal or paediatric ward experience, for three situations: a preterm or NICU-graduate baby who needs feeding support, monitoring and infection precautions in the first weeks at home; a mother and newborn in the days after delivery, including C-section wound and feeding support; and a child recovering from surgery or on IV antibiotics or nebulisation. It is booked as visits or 12-hour shifts, with 48 to 72 hours’ notice.
Where a nurse fits, and where a japa does
Most newborns need a japa or a nanny.
A few need a nurse.
A healthy full-term baby and a recovering mother are well served by an experienced japa maid or a newborn nanny, and we place both. A nurse is the right person when there is a clinical task: a preterm baby discharged from the NICU with a feeding plan and a weight target, a mother with a C-section wound that needs dressing or a fever, a child on a course of IV antibiotics, a toddler recovering from surgery. How booking works
Lead times, shifts and what the nurse needs to see.
For a NICU graduate we ask for the discharge summary and the feeding plan before confirming, and roster a nurse with neonatal unit experience. Postnatal and sick-child bookings are matched to a nurse with paediatric or maternity ward experience.

- NICU discharge dates are usually known days ahead; enquire when the neonatologist first mentions one.

- Night shifts are the most requested for preterm babies on 2 to 3-hourly feeds.

- Plus the paediatrician’s contact for escalation. Formula, feeding tubes and medicines are supplied on the paediatrician’s plan.

Who comes
Nurses from the newborn and children’s wards,
not adapted from adult care.
A preterm baby’s vital signs, feeding cues and warning signs are different from an adult’s, and so is the handling. We roster nurses with neonatal or paediatric ward experience for these bookings, and for a NICU graduate specifically someone who has worked in a neonatal unit. The paediatrician remains in charge; the nurse follows the plan and reports.

The nurse checks the plan, sets up the log and works alongside the parents, teaching the routines as she goes.

Step down as the baby or child recovers
When weight, feeding and the paediatrician’s review are on track, the booking ends or steps down to a japa or nanny.

- The paediatrician has asked for vitals or weights to be recorded at home
A japa or nanny is right when
- The baby is full-term and healthy and the family needs help with bathing, massage, settling and nights
- The mother is recovering normally and wants rest, meals and someone experienced with newborns
- The need is childcare for a well child while parents work
