  • Measure the room and doorway width, electric beds are usually larger than a standard cot and need clearance for a wheelchair or commode nearby
  • Decide between manual and electric based on how often the patient needs repositioning, frequent adjustments favour an electric bed
  • Check for a power point near the intended bed position if you are choosing an electric model
  • Ask whether the patient needs Trendelenburg or advanced ICU-grade positions, not all beds include these
  • Confirm how long the bed is needed. A short post-surgical recovery usually favours renting, a chronic bedridden condition usually favours buying

Using it safely at home

  • Lock the bed’s wheels once it is positioned, an unlocked bed can shift during a transfer and cause a fall

  • Keep the remote or crank handle within the caregiver’s reach, not the patient’s, if confusion or restlessness is a concern
